Blanket Accident Insurance: Can Stress Cause Sports Injuries?

Blanket Accident Insurance Can Stress Cause Sports InjuriesWhile every athlete is subject to varying degrees of stress, the way it manifests could increase the risk of a sports injury. Personal relationships, academic pressure, and excessive physical activity can contribute to high stress levels, leading to poor performance and increased risk of harm.  In addition to ensuring their participants are adequately protected with the right Blanket Accident Insurance policy, it’s imperative that coaches, team managers, and players alike understand the role stress plays in sports injuries.

Bryan Mann, assistant professor of physical therapy in the University of Missouri (MU) School of Health Professions, states that “Stress is systemic. Everything players deal with on a daily basis creates stress. They don’t have separate accounts to withdraw from for practice, school and relationships. Whenever there’s stress, something’s got to give. “

A study performed by MU researchers analyzed 101 student athletes on a Division 1 college football team during its 20-week season, and found that stress played a significant role in injury. The survey found that players were 3.19 times more likely to suffer an injury during times of high academic pressure, such as midterms and finals. Training camp and other intensely physically demanding weeks resulted in athletes being 2.84 times more likely to obtain injury restrictions, according to News Medical.

An athlete’s natural response to stressful situations, such as narrowing attention for focus or excessive muscular tension, causes increased risk for injury.  As outside sources of stress cannot always be controlled, adaptations to reduce the risk are necessary. Mann reassures “We know when there will be midterms and finals, and we can plan for these academic stressors and accommodate practices accordingly to minimize the risk of injures. Some stressors we can’t predict, but if we know about them, then there are things that we can do. Coaches should get to know the athletes and watch how their attitudes change. As attitudes change, it usually indicates that something else is going on in their lives.”

Stress is not exclusive to college sports teams; physical and emotional stressors could affect youth athletes as well as adults, and should never be ignored.
