The Essentials: Fall Maintenance Checklist

Posted on: September 27, 2016 by Aegis Security Insurance

Fall has officially begun which means cooler weather and snow storms are in the near future. However, before these conditions wreak havoc on the home, ensure the following checklist is completed to prepare for the harsh weather to come. In addition, secure the property with a Specialty Homeowners Insurance program.

Inspect the roof.

According to Better Homes and Gardens, here’s how to properly inspect the roof to prevent vexing concerns: Inspect your roof from top to bottom, using binoculars if necessary. Check ridge shingles for cracks and wind damage. Look for damage to metal flashing in valleys and around vents and chimneys. Scan the entire roof for missing, curled, or damaged shingles. Look in your gutters for large accumulations of granules, a sign that your roof is losing its coating; expect problems soon. Finally, make sure your gutters are flowing freely.

Smoke and CO detectors.

Replace the batteries in both the smoke and the carbon monoxide detectors in the home. Ensure the alarms on each level of the home are working properly, as well.

Clean the fireplace.

Have the flue professionally cleaned at least once per year to rid the chimney of any creosote which is a flammable byproduct of burning wood. This will ensure a fire does not break out!

Check the furnace.

It’s recommended that homeowners examine their furnaces before the snow and freezing weather sets in. If there is a problem, it can be repaired before the furnace is really needed and the repairs can be completed quicker without the rush of the winter season.
