Avoiding Halloween Hazards: Holiday Fire Safety

Posted on: October 21, 2015 by Aegis Security Insurance

Halloween is undoubtedly a fun, festive holiday that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. As iconic Halloween decorations, such as jack-o-lanterns and hay bales, can pose severe fire hazards, it is important to take the following precautions. In addition, Homeowners Insurance can help to reduce the risk and cover homeowners against Halloween hazards.

Keep Decorations Away from Flames- All festive decorations should be placed a safe distance away from heat sources. Doorways, driveways, and walkways should be clearly marked and free of any obstructions that would block an escape route. Rather than candles to light up jack-o-lanterns, consider using battery operated lights to reduce the risk of fires. If candles are used, they should be lit with long fireplace lighters rather than matches to avoid hand burning. Lit pumpkins should not be placed within close proximity to trick-or-treaters.

Costume Safety- Ensure no long, loose ends of costumes drag behind children that could be stepped on or reach any open flames. If the child is wearing a face mask, double check that there are proper eye holes so he or she has clear visibility.

Use Flashlights- Rather than lit torches or candles, walkways and yards lit by flashlights are much safer for trick-or-treaters whose costumers may brush up against the lighting as they walk from the door, according to Prop M Homes. Advise children to bring flashlights when they venture out for the night and remind them of the dangers of open flames.

Keep Pets Inside- As children dressed in a variety of costumes are bound to come to the home, pets can become stressed and anxious and potentially dart out the door. ASPCA advises that pets be kept away from the excitement of the night in a separate room.

Yard Cleanup- Children will be on and off the property throughout the night, racing about. In order to avoid any potential mishaps, rake leaves, remove dead branches, and keep bikes and plants out of walkways.
