Harley-Davidson Tire Safety Tips
Posted on: October 6, 2015 by Aegis Security Insurance
As only a small portion of the tires connects the motorcycle to the road, it is imperative that they are maintained to remain in top shape for performance and safety. To protect the rider and the bike itself, Harley-Davidson Insurance is essential. In addition, the following tips are recommended for Harley-Davidson tire care.
Dial in Tire Pressure- While most riders don’t think to check the tire pressure, this is one of the most important precautions one can take. Steve Bindi, H-D Product Portfolio Manager states “Checking tire pressure is one of the most important tire-maintenance functions a rider can perform. Properly inflated tires wear longer, and correct pressure promotes better braking, better fuel economy, maximizes traction, and reduces the risk of tire damage or failure.” Experts recommend checking the tire pressure before each ride when they are cold. Specifically designed gauges for motorcycles should be used to ensure accurate readings, as well.
Obey Load Weight Limits- Tire failure and loss of control can result from excessive loading of the motorcycle. Before starting the trip, ensure that the passengers, accessories, and luggage do not exceed the loading limit. Motorcycle USA states that for every 4 PSI a tire is underinflated, up to 80 pounds of load-carrying capacity is lost.
Replace Bald & Damaged Tires- It is common for tires to have cuts, nails, and other sharp objects stuck in them from traveling. As such, tire pressure can be affected and cause the wearing of the tire to be increased. If any damage is visible, an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer should be contacted as soon as possible to prevent any further damage. Bear in mind that damaged and tired tires result in poor performance and loss of traction and control.
Buy the Right Tires- Harley-Davidson has partnered with Dunlop and Michelin to create Harley-Davidson co-branded tires which are exclusively designed, tested, and approved to deliver optimal performance, according to Motorcycle USA. These customized tires are integral to the performance and longevity of the bike and should be used consistently.
