Proactive Ways to Prevent Home Fires
Posted on: April 20, 2016 by Aegis Security Insurance

It’s any homeowner’s worse nightmare: a fire breaking out. While there are many potential causes of these disasters, there are even more ways to be proactive in order to reduce the threat altogether. More importantly, however, is securing the best Dwelling Fire Insurance Program available to defend against the damages and losses as a result of fires.
Have the house inspected.
Especially if the home was built longer than 20 years ago, it’s recommended that the electrical wiring, heating, plumbing, and AC are checked. While it’s advised that homeowners enlist the help of a professional, get a head start by checking attics and crawl spaces for damaged wiring from pests, any intermittent power outages or surges, or overloaded circuit breakers.
Have the inspector check that the gas lines and pilot lights are all functioning properly. Next, ensure the vents are cleared of any debris, especially flammable materials, and search for any leaks.
Check appliances.
Grease buildup can cause fire hazards on the stove, so clean it frequently. Next, Check the power cords for your appliances. Look for missing grounding prongs on the plugs and damaged insulation, and replace or repair them if defects are found. Lastly, replace vents in the stove’s hood to ensure proper filtration and smoke ventilation.
Mind your heating sources.
Never leave an open flame on the stove or burning candles unattended. In addition, it’s recommended that smoking be done outside to prevent ashes and sparks from igniting household materials. All decorations, especially near flames and flammable materials, should be kept at a distance. Similarly, barbecues and outdoor grills should be monitored at all times and matches should be run under water before being placed in the trash can to prevent potential fires.
