Riding a Motorcycle in Summer Heat
Posted on: July 7, 2016 by Aegis Security Insurance

Riding in extreme heat poses significant threats to motorcyclists. Not only are they more prone to accidents, but they are exposed to the elements while on their bikes and can suffer heat exhaustion, heat stroke, sunburns, and more. So, in addition to securing the best Motorcycle Insurance available, consider the following advice for a safe ride this summer season.
Identify the signs of heat exhaustion.
Cramps, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and sweating can be indicators of heat exhaustion. Rather than ignore the signs, it’s important to pull over and rest for as long as needed in order to regain composure. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry- if the rider tries to push through, they run the risk of passing out while riding.
Stay covered.
While many may think it’s counterproductive to cover up as much skin as possible under extreme heat, protective clothing will prevent sunburn and keep the body cool. According to the Lost Adventure, any areas of skin that are exposed will be much harder to cool, as the sweat will evaporate from the air rushing over it at speed- this means you’ll dehydrate faster. So, wear abrasion-resistant gear with mesh ventilation to protect the skin and stay cool on the road.
Bring more than enough water.
Water is essential to a properly functioning body. Without it, the body will struggle to remain cool. Therefore, to prevent the body from physically crashing, drink a liter of water per hour in extreme heat and make sure to replenish the body with electrolytes.
Make pit stops.
When planning a summer road trip, especially through deserts, be sure to make pit stops to get a break from the sun and to cool off. Grab some water, socialize with the people at the convenience stores, and relax for a few minutes. Taking the necessary breaks will prevent heat exhaustion and promote a safer riding trip.
