Why is Sports Accident Insurance Important?

While winter is still battering parts of the country, warmer weather is just around the corner. Spring will come, and when it does athletes will return to the outdoors to participate in a variety of sports and activities. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), nearly 30 million children and adolescents participate in youth sports in the United States each year, however reports indicate the between 1.5 and 3.5 million young athletes are injured in sports accidents during that same time period. Some sports are more dangerous than others, and it is important that athletic supervisors alert their players about the inherent dangers of athletic competitions to prevent liability exposures, especially when youth players are involved.

Last year consumer advocacy group Safe Kids Worldwide analyzed emergency room records, medical data and injury reports to determine which sports and outdoor activities are the most dangerous for young athletes. It comes as no surprise that in America, football is the leading cause you injuries in your athletes in frequency. Basketball and soccer are subsequent runners up as leading injury inducing activities, followed by baseball and softball rounding out the top five. While their research provides the number of injuries players of each sport suffered in connection with that activity each year, it does not take into account the percentage of players injured vs total number of participants in each sport. As such, some sports that have high injury rates, such as hockey, did not even make the list.

Sports injuries can be a dangerous liability concern for coaches, team managers and event sponsors. When it comes to protecting youth athletes, the responsibility often falls to the coaches and regulating authorities to prevent, identify and appropriately treat injuries. Should a young athlete suffer an injury, there will likely be resulting legal complications.
